In recent times, the internet has been abuzz with a newfound trend that promises to ease an upset stomach – sipping hot water. While many may think of this as a novel discovery, the truth is that this practice has been a part of many cultures for centuries. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been gaining popularity, and sipping warm water is one practice that has caught the attention of many online users.

Experts have weighed in on why ditching ice and opting for warm water may be beneficial for your health. Pasu Harisadee, a traditional Chinese medicine educator at RAKxa Integrative Wellness, highlights that sipping warm water is considered a longevity habit in TCM that aids in digestion and balances the body’s energy flow. Warm water acts as a “fuel” for the digestive system, helping to break down nutrients efficiently. According to Harisadee, the heat from warm water relaxes the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, promoting the flow of vital energy (Qi) and blood in the body.

Saher Hussaini, a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, explains that the stomach and spleen, responsible for digestion in TCM, thrive on warmth. Warm water allows for proper breakdown of food, absorption of nutrients, and circulation of healthy Qi throughout the body. On the other hand, iced cold water can weaken digestive functioning, leading to symptoms like bloating and sluggish digestion.

From a Western medicine perspective, Zulia Frost, MD, co-founder and Clinical Director of Recharge Health, mentions that warm water signals the nervous system to enter a “rest and digest” state, promoting better digestion and reducing bloating. While studies on the direct effects of warm water on metabolism are limited, the benefits are mostly indirect and can support gut health, toxin elimination, pain relief, hydration, and stress reduction.

However, it’s essential to note a few downsides to sipping hot water. Dr. Frost advises against consuming very hot water outside of meals, as it may release gastric juice prematurely and potentially cause digestive issues for those with sensitive stomachs.

In conclusion, sipping warm water can be a simple yet effective practice to support your digestive health and overall well-being. Whether you choose to follow this age-old tradition from TCM or embrace it as a modern wellness trend, the benefits of warm water are worth considering for a healthier lifestyle.
