A grass fire broke out at the entrance of Coal Creek Canyon in Arvada, burning over 100 acres and prompting pre-evacuation warnings while closing roads on Saturday morning, according to fire officials.
The Candelas neighborhood was placed under a pre-evacuation warning for several hours after the Plainview fire ignited near Colorado 93 and Colorado 72 at 8:35 a.m., as reported by Arvada Fire Rescue spokesperson Brady Johnson.
By 10 a.m., the fire had scorched more than 100 acres and was 80% contained, with crews actively working on mopping up and achieving full containment. All pre-evacuation orders were lifted by 11:40 a.m.
No injuries were reported, and no structures were at risk from the fire, confirmed the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a tweet from Jeffco Sheriff, the Plainview Fire is at 80% containment and does not seem to be connected to the train tracks. Multiple agencies were commended for their teamwork in managing the situation.
“Breezy conditions and dry fuels allowed this fire to rapidly expand in size,” stated fire officials on social media.
Colorado 93 and Colorado 72 were both shut down in the vicinity of the fire, with closures between specific intersections, as per the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The fire was mostly contained on the northwest side of the two highways, said Johnson. The cause of the fire is under investigation and is not believed to be linked to the nearby train tracks, according to the sheriff’s office.
