Prime numbers are the fundamental building blocks of mathematics, much like atoms are the building blocks of matter. These numbers, which can only be divided by 1 and themselves, have intrigued and fascinated humanity for centuries. They hold many secrets, including their distribution on the number line, and the quest to discover more prime numbers has captured the attention of generations of scholars.

Over 2,300 years ago, Euclid proved that there are infinitely many prime numbers. Despite this fact, some primes stand out as particularly interesting. Here, we explore three extraordinary prime numbers and their unique stories.

The Sheldon Prime, famously featured in an episode of the sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” holds a special place in the world of mathematics. Mathematician Christopher Spicer and his team set out to explore the concept of “Sheldon primes” after the show aired in 2010. Through meticulous research, they concluded that the number 73 is indeed a unique Sheldon prime, showcasing distinctive properties that set it apart from other prime numbers.

In 2025, the internet was abuzz with the “6-7” phenomenon, where social media platforms were flooded with references to this seemingly random number combination. While the origin of this meme remains unclear, the number 67 itself holds mathematical significance. As the 19th prime number, 67 is considered a super-prime and is part of two consecutive pairs of “sexy primes.” Additionally, 67 plays a role in the “lazy caterer’s sequence,” indicating the maximum number of pieces a disk can be divided into with a certain number of cuts.

For those intrigued by the mystical and mysterious, the Belphegor prime stands out as a prime number with a dark twist. Discovered by mathematician Harvey Dubner, this prime number, 1,000,000,000,000,066,600,000,000,000,001, features a palindrome with the notorious “devil’s number” 666 at its center. This unique prime number, named after a demon, has captivated mathematicians with its eerie properties and connections to the supernatural.

As we delve into the world of prime numbers, we uncover a realm of endless fascination and complexity. From the Sheldon Prime to the enigmatic Belphegor prime, these numbers continue to intrigue and inspire mathematicians and enthusiasts alike.
