The ProShares – Ultra QQQ ETF (NYSEMKT:QLD) and the ProShares – Ultra S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT:SSO) are both leveraged ETFs that aim to double the daily returns of major U.S. equity indexes. However, SSO tracks the S&P 500 while QLD tracks the Nasdaq-100, leading to differences in their performance and risk profiles.

When comparing the two ETFs, it’s essential to consider various factors such as expenses, risk, recent returns, and portfolio makeup. SSO has an expense ratio of 0.87%, slightly lower than QLD’s 0.95%. In terms of 1-year return as of Feb. 2, 2026, QLD outperformed SSO with a return of 29.85% compared to SSO’s 23.67%. However, SSO offers a higher dividend yield of 0.68% compared to QLD’s 0.17%.

In terms of portfolio composition, QLD allocates 53% to technology, 17% to communication services, and 13% to consumer cyclical stocks. Its top holdings include Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft, reflecting a strong tilt towards large-cap tech companies. On the other hand, SSO tracks the S&P 500 with a broader sector mix of 35% technology, 13% financial services, and 11% communication services.

Both ETFs reset their leverage daily, which can lead to performance deviations from expectations, especially in volatile markets. QLD has a higher beta of 2.35 compared to SSO’s 2.03, indicating higher price volatility relative to the S&P 500.

It’s important to note that leveraged ETFs like QLD and SSO are best suited for short-term investments due to their compounding and volatility quirks. Investors should prioritize their risk tolerance and investment goals when considering these ETFs.
