New York Democrats Support Sanctuary State Legislation

New York Democrats at the state convention in Syracuse have shown their support for a measure denouncing ICE and endorsing legislation to make New York a sanctuary state. The party unanimously backed a resolution in favor of the New York for All Act, which aims to restrict local government cooperation with ICE.

The resolution criticizes ICE for its actions, stating that the agency operates with violence and disregard for human life. The New York for All Act would prevent state and local resources from aiding non-criminal federal immigration efforts.

Recent polls have shown that a majority of New York voters disagree with ICE’s tactics, providing momentum for Democrats to make immigration a key campaign issue. Party leaders, including Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and state Sen. Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, are ready to take a stand against ICE.

Assemblyman Brian Cunningham, who supports Governor Kathy Hochul, criticized Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman for his cooperation with ICE. Hochul has proposed legislation to limit local government agreements with ICE, in response to recent incidents during the federal immigration enforcement surge.

Despite opposition from Blakeman, Hochul remains committed to restricting ICE’s influence in the state. The Democratic Committee, led by Chairman Jay Jacobs, is united in its support for the resolution at the statewide conference.
