A seasoned meditator who has spent years honing his ability to quiet his sense of self recently participated in a study that compared the effects of meditation with those of a low dose of the psychedelic 5-MeO-DMT. The results were intriguing, showing that both practices induced similar altered states of consciousness.

The study, conducted by Christopher Timmermann and his team at University College London, aimed to explore the similarities between the brain activity of a master meditator and the effects of 5-MeO-DMT, a powerful psychedelic compound found in the Colorado river toad. The participant in the study was a lama from the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, known for his exceptional meditation skills acquired through over 54,000 hours of practice.

During the study, the lama engaged in meditation sessions lasting 30 to 60 minutes, followed by either a placebo or a low or high dose of 5-MeO-DMT. Brain scans conducted during these sessions revealed intriguing parallels between the effects of meditation and the low dose of the psychedelic. Both practices were associated with increased alpha power, indicating relaxed wakefulness and internal focus, as well as reduced gamma activity, linked to cognitive engagement and memory.

Interestingly, the lama reported a sense of equanimity during both meditation and the low dose of 5-MeO-DMT, where thoughts arose and dissolved effortlessly. However, meditation produced a stronger sense of interconnectedness and mental clarity compared to the psychedelic experience. The high dose of 5-MeO-DMT, on the other hand, led to a profound sense of disconnection from the self and surroundings, accompanied by intense visual and sensory hallucinations.

The researchers noted that the low dose of 5-MeO-DMT reduced neuronal firing and entropy, indicating a more predictable brain activity pattern, while the high dose increased neuronal firing and entropy, suggesting an overwhelming of the senses and thoughts. These findings shed light on the neural pathways associated with ego dissolution and contentless awareness, although they may not fully explain the subjective experiences of the participant.

While the study focused on a single experienced meditator, the results offer intriguing insights into the potential benefits of 5-MeO-DMT for enhancing meditation practices. Timmermann believes that further research could help individuals advance their meditation practice more quickly, but cautions against attempting to use the drug outside of controlled settings due to its legal status in many countries.

In conclusion, the study highlights the overlap between meditation and psychedelic experiences, offering a glimpse into the potential benefits of combining these practices for enhanced consciousness exploration. For those interested in reaping the mental health benefits associated with psychedelics, meditation remains a safe and viable alternative that does not pose the risks of toxicity or addiction. The Benefits of Eating a Plant-Based Diet

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in plant-based diets as people become more conscious of their health and the environmental impact of their food choices. A plant-based diet is one that focuses on eating foods that come from plants, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes, and excludes or minimizes animal products like meat, dairy, and eggs.

There are numerous benefits to adopting a plant-based diet, both for your health and the planet. One of the main advantages is the potential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Plant-based diets are typically lower in saturated fat and cholesterol, and higher in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, all of which can contribute to better overall health.

Research has shown that plant-based diets can also help with weight management and may even lead to weight loss. Because plant-based foods are generally lower in calories and higher in fiber, they can help you feel full and satisfied while consuming fewer calories. This can be especially beneficial for those looking to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

In addition to the health benefits, plant-based diets are also more sustainable and environmentally friendly than diets that rely heavily on animal products. Animal agriculture is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water pollution, so reducing the amount of animal products in your diet can help reduce your carbon footprint and lessen your impact on the environment.

Furthermore, plant-based diets are often more affordable than diets that include a lot of animal products. Fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes are generally less expensive than meat, dairy, and eggs, making it easier to eat healthily on a budget.

While some people may be hesitant to adopt a plant-based diet because they are unsure of how to get enough protein or other essential nutrients, it is entirely possible to meet all of your nutritional needs on a plant-based diet with proper planning. There are plenty of plant-based sources of protein, such as beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, and quinoa, as well as other important nutrients like iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids.

In conclusion, there are numerous benefits to eating a plant-based diet, including improved health, weight management, sustainability, affordability, and ethical considerations. Whether you are looking to improve your health, reduce your environmental impact, or simply try something new, incorporating more plant-based foods into your diet is a smart and beneficial choice.
