A recent long-term study has revealed that consuming a few cups of caffeinated coffee or tea each day may lower the risk of developing dementia. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that the lowest risk was associated with drinking around two to three cups of caffeinated coffee or one to two cups of tea per day. Interestingly, consuming more of these beverages did not further lower the risk of dementia.

The study, which analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, included over 130,000 participants who had not been diagnosed with cancer, Parkinson’s disease, or dementia. Participants completed dietary questionnaires every few years, and researchers tracked cases of dementia through death records or self-reported medical diagnoses.

Moderate daily consumption of caffeinated coffee for women was around 2.5 cups, while the highest consumption was around 4.5 cups. Men in those categories drank slightly less coffee. The top coffee drinkers tended to be younger and more likely to smoke.

The study revealed that there were 330 new cases of dementia per 100,000 people per year among those who did not drink any caffeinated coffee. Among moderate consumers, the rate was 229 per 100,000 per year. The rate was even lower for those who drank the most coffee. After adjusting for factors such as age and smoking, both moderate and high consumption of coffee lowered the risk of dementia by a similar amount, 19 and 18 percent, respectively. Additionally, participants who drank more tea also experienced a lower risk of dementia, although the study did not have information on whether the tea contained caffeine.

While the researchers did not investigate the specific mechanisms by which tea or caffeinated coffee might reduce dementia risk, past research has suggested that caffeine may reduce inflammation and that other compounds in these beverages may help reduce oxidative stress, which can lead to cellular damage. However, the exact role of diet in the development of dementia is complex and not fully understood. It is unlikely that the risk of dementia can be attributed solely to a few cups of coffee or tea.

Overall, these findings suggest that moderate consumption of caffeinated coffee and tea may have a protective effect against the development of dementia. Further research is needed to better understand the relationship between these beverages and brain health.
