Why has this winter been so cold in the U.S. East and warm in the country’s West?

Why has this winter been so cold in the U.S. East and warm in the country’s West?

As we delve into the depths of winter, many are left wondering why this season has been particularly cold in some regions while unseasonably warm in others. The eastern United States has been blanketed with frigid temperatures, with wind chills dipping into the negative teens and 20s Fahrenheit, creating treacherous conditions for residents. In stark contrast, the western part of the country has experienced record-breaking warmth, with some areas seeing temperatures more typical of spring or even summer.

Climate scientist Daniel Swain of the California Institute for Water Resources explains that this weather dichotomy is a result of a persistent atmospheric pattern that is about to shift. This pattern has caused the polar vortex, a circular rush of wind that typically traps cold air in the Arctic, to weaken and create wavy patterns in the jet stream. These patterns dictate where cold air travels, with southward bends bringing frigid temperatures to the East and northward bends ushering in warmer air to the West.

The unique geography of the United States, including the Rockies and the Pacific Ocean, plays a role in reinforcing these atmospheric patterns. The current situation is an amplification of this background pattern, resulting in the extreme weather conditions we are witnessing.

The rapid warming of the Arctic may also be contributing to the weakening of the polar vortex, although researchers are still studying the extent of this impact. As winters become warmer overall, episodes of bitter cold become more disruptive as people are less acclimated to freezing temperatures and businesses may not be prepared.

While the consequences of the cold weather have been immediate and severe, including travel disruptions, power outages, and fatalities, the warm winter in the West is also cause for concern. The prolonged warmth could lead to drought, water shortages, and an increased risk of wildfires in the coming months.

As the atmospheric pattern shifts, temperatures are expected to return to more seasonable levels in the East, while the West will experience cooler, wetter weather. Any precipitation will be welcomed, but it may not be enough to offset existing deficits in water supply.

Overall, the upcoming weather changes are a reminder of the delicate balance of our climate system and the interconnectedness of weather patterns across regions. By understanding these dynamics, we can better prepare for and adapt to the shifting conditions brought on by a changing climate.
