OpenAI has recently announced that it is testing the waters with advertisements on its ChatGPT AI chatbot. The company shared in a blog post that ads are now being introduced to select users on the Free and Go subscription tiers in the US.

It’s important to note that users on the ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will not be subjected to these ads. OpenAI assures users that the ads will not impact the responses provided by ChatGPT and that conversations will not be shared with advertisers.

The primary goal behind introducing ads to ChatGPT is to help support the development of more advanced features and capabilities for users. The revenue generated from these ads will contribute to infrastructure improvements and ongoing investments required to maintain the platform’s speed and reliability.

For users who prefer an ad-free experience, there are options available. Upgrading to the Plus or Pro tiers will eliminate ads altogether. Alternatively, users on the Free tier can choose to opt out of ads, although this may result in a reduction in the number of daily free messages available.

OpenAI has outlined specific guidelines for the implementation of ads on ChatGPT. Advertisements will always be clearly labeled as sponsored content and visually distinct from the chatbot’s responses. The content of the ads will be based on previous discussions and interactions within the platform, ensuring relevance to users’ interests and avoiding sensitive topics.

Furthermore, ads will only be displayed to users aged 18 and above, and they will be carefully curated to align with the user’s previous engagement with related topics. For example, if a user has shown interest in recipes, they may see ads for meal kit or grocery delivery services.

Overall, OpenAI aims to strike a balance between providing a valuable user experience and leveraging ads to support the growth and enhancement of ChatGPT. By implementing transparent and user-centric advertising practices, the company is working towards creating a sustainable and innovative AI chatbot platform.
