The recent release of Seedance 2.0, an AI video generator by ByteDance, has sparked controversy within the film industry. The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has condemned the service for its alleged copyright infringement, stating that Seedance 2.0 has engaged in unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works on a massive scale in just one day. The MPA spokesperson criticized ByteDance for disregarding copyright laws that protect the rights of creators and support American jobs, urging the company to cease its infringing activity immediately.

This is not the first time the film industry has faced issues with AI-generated content. Last fall, OpenAI released Sora 2, which also raised concerns about copyright infringement. The MPA called on OpenAI to take decisive action to address the issue and protect the rights of creators. In response, OpenAI implemented safeguards to prevent users from violating studio copyrights and later reached a licensing agreement with Disney to use 200 characters on Sora 2.

However, it remains unclear whether ByteDance will adopt a similar approach or if copyright owners will resort to filing takedown notices and infringement suits. The company has not yet responded to requests for comments on the matter. Some industry insiders have expressed pessimism about the future of Hollywood in light of AI-generated videos, with writer Rhett Reese suggesting that the industry may soon be overtaken by computer-generated content.

The controversial video featuring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fighting on a rooftop was created by Ruairi Robinson, an Irish filmmaker. Robinson shared that the video was generated from just a two-line prompt in Seedance 2.0, sparking debates about the impact of AI on the film industry. Other Seedance videos circulating online include parodies of popular films and TV shows like “Spider-Man,” “Titanic,” “Stranger Things,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Shrek,” and more.

The proliferation of AI-generated content has raised questions about the future of creativity and intellectual property rights in the entertainment industry. As technology continues to advance, it is vital for creators, studios, and tech companies to find a balance between innovation and respecting copyright laws. The ongoing debate surrounding Seedance 2.0 highlights the challenges and complexities of navigating the intersection of AI and entertainment.
