Woodblock, a rapidly growing animation studio based in Berlin, has made a name for itself by creating visually stunning shows at Las Vegas’ Sphere, following its success in producing acclaimed shorts. Established in 2013 by six friends who studied at Germany’s Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg in Ludwigsburg, the studio has now expanded to a team of 50, with additional teams in Ludwigsburg and Los Angeles. Woodblock has collaborated with renowned brands such as Greenpeace, Disney, Netflix, Apple, Nike, and Adidas.
One of the studio’s notable achievements is creating 80 minutes of sci-fi-inspired visuals for electronic music artist Anyma’s show “The End of Genesys” at the Sphere in 2024. They are currently working on their next project for the immersive “Odyssey” concert series by electronic dance music star Illenium, set to debut in March.
Woodblock is now venturing into new territory with a lineup of ambitious sci-fi and horror-fantasy series that showcase their unique style. One of their latest projects, “Dark World,” is a globe-trotting, fantasy-horror series created in collaboration with Berlin-based production and distribution group DCM. The series follows a teenage boy who teams up with the Fairy Queen of Celtic lore to save malevolent mythical creatures from around the world.
In addition to “Dark World,” Woodblock is working on other upcoming shows like “Blue Marble” and “Space Probe Force.” “Blue Marble” follows a girl and her robot companion as they embark on a culinary adventure to discover rare ingredients in a future Earth setting. On the other hand, “Space Probe Force” offers a satirical take on human space explorers traveling the galaxy from the perspective of alien inhabitants.
Woodblock’s dedication to original storytelling is evident in their projects, such as the acclaimed animated short “Bye Bear” and their focus on developing series and films as their primary medium. The studio’s CEO, Ilija Brunck, is set to speak at the EFM Beyond workshop during the European Film Market at the Berlinale, where he will discuss the growing importance of game engines in the animation sector.
As Woodblock continues to push boundaries and explore new creative avenues, their innovative approach to storytelling and visual style sets them apart in the world of animation. With a diverse range of projects in the pipeline and a strong emphasis on collaboration and originality, Woodblock is poised to captivate audiences with their captivating and imaginative content.
