Cole Scammell, a Dunedin motorcycle racer, took on the challenge of the Burt Munro Challenge in Invercargill from February 4-8 and emerged victorious, earning the prestigious competitor of the year award. Not only did he achieve podium finishes, but he also displayed his willingness to compete in various races by racing on six different bikes and two vehicles over the course of four days.

Scammell’s adventurous spirit led him to take on eight bikes and participate in a range of races, showcasing his love for riding bikes. Despite the exhaustion, he found joy in the friendly atmosphere of some of the races, particularly those featuring older bikes. When asked about his favorite bike, Scammell simply replied, “The one I am riding at that time.”

Accompanied by his partner Tasha Williamson, Scammell embarked on his journey to Invercargill on February 4, where they arrived late in the evening. The night was dedicated to preparing the bikes and loading them onto the trailer for the upcoming races.

The next morning, Scammell kicked off the day by heading to the Bluff Hill Climb with his turbo Suzuki Hayabusa. Despite the intimidating 600m straight, he enjoyed the challenge of pushing the bike to its limits. The day continued with drag racing at Teretonga, where Scammell raced four bikes and achieved impressive results, including winning a class with his 2000 Hayabusa.

His second-place finish across all classes, with a quarter-mile time of 9.43 seconds at 253kmh, highlighted his skill and determination. Overall, Scammell’s performance at the Burt Munro Challenge exemplified his passion for motorcycling and his ability to excel in a variety of racing events.
