The Federal Reserve’s decision to lower the federal funds rate in 2024 has led to a downward trend in deposit interest rates, with rates currently sitting below historic highs. Despite this, there are still high-yield savings accounts available with APYs above 4%. If you’re considering putting your money into a savings account, now might be the right time to do so.

According to the FDIC, the national average rate for savings accounts is a mere 0.39%. However, top high-yield savings accounts are offering more than 10 times that rate. As of February 13, 2026, some of the highest savings account rates available are 4% APY, offered by financial institutions like SoFi, Barclays, and Valley Direct.

It’s important to shop around before settling on a savings account, as interest rates can vary widely. Online banks, in particular, are known for offering competitive rates due to their lower overhead costs. Many of the best high-yield savings accounts from online banks come with zero monthly fees and no minimum opening deposit requirements.

Credit unions are another option for finding high-yield savings accounts with rates ranging between 4% and 5% APY. These not-for-profit financial cooperatives often provide competitive rates and fewer fees. While some credit unions have membership requirements, there are others that allow almost anyone to join.

Savings accounts are considered one of the safest places to keep your money, as they are insured by the FDIC (or NCUA for credit unions) up to $250,000 in case of a financial institution failure. Unlike market investments, savings accounts are not subject to market fluctuations and cannot lose money.

While savings accounts may not offer the same returns as market investments, they are ideal for short-term savings goals like a down payment on a home, vacation, or building an emergency fund. If you need access to your money without restrictions, a high-yield savings account is a great option compared to money market accounts or certificates of deposit (CDs).

In conclusion, if you’re looking to save for short-term goals and want a safe place to keep your money with competitive interest rates, a high-yield savings account is a smart choice. Consider exploring online banks and credit unions for the best rates and features that suit your financial needs.
