Chicago Man on Electronic Monitoring Accused of Violently Mugging Elderly Man

A Chicago man who was released on electronic monitoring after allegedly beating and robbing a migrant is now facing new charges for violently mugging a 73-year-old man while still wearing the court-ordered ankle bracelet.

Last year, William Holt, 20, and an accomplice allegedly attacked a 20-year-old migrant in the first block of North Parkside. The victim was robbed and beaten, with Holt even biting the victim’s hand before fleeing with his wallet. Despite these allegations, Judge James Murphy decided to place Holt on electronic monitoring instead of detaining him.

However, Holt failed to appear in court on multiple occasions in July, with his electronic monitoring bracelet going into shutdown mode at one point. Despite this, he eventually resumed wearing the ankle monitor.

Fast forward to last month, prosecutors say Holt was still wearing the ankle monitor when he attacked and mugged a 73-year-old man in the 300 block of North Central Avenue. Surveillance footage helped Chicago police officers identify Holt, leading to his recent arrest.

During a recent court hearing, Judge Ankur Srivastava ordered Holt to be detained on the new charge of robbing an elderly victim. The judge emphasized that Holt poses a significant threat to the community, especially considering he was already on electronic monitoring for a previous robbery when he allegedly committed this latest crime.

The judge’s decision to detain Holt highlights the serious nature of his alleged crimes and the continued threat he poses to the safety of the community. Despite being on electronic monitoring, Holt’s actions demonstrate a pattern of violence and aggression that cannot be ignored.
