Locarno Pro’s First Look program is set to shine a spotlight on Uruguay during the upcoming 79th Locarno Film Festival from August 5 to 15. This program, known for showcasing works-in-progress in the international arthouse cinema scene, provides producers with a valuable platform to present their projects to key industry players such as sales agents, distributors, and festival programmers at a critical stage in their film’s development and market trajectory.

In its 15th edition, First Look will collaborate with the Uruguayan film institute ACAU to showcase six Uruguayan feature films currently in post-production. The producers of these films will have the opportunity to present their projects to international sales agents, buyers, festival programmers, and post-production fund representatives.

In addition to on-site presentations, these projects will also be accessible to accredited professionals through the Festival’s online digital library. Markus Duffner, director of Locarno Pro, expressed his excitement about highlighting Uruguay for this edition, emphasizing the program’s mission to support outstanding films in their final stages and to boost the international careers of emerging filmmakers. The collaboration with ACAU is expected to enhance the international visibility of Uruguayan production companies.

ACAU president Gisella Pevitali echoed this sentiment, stating that Uruguay’s presence in First Look 2026 represents a strategic moment for the country’s cinematography. She emphasized the continuous evolution of Uruguay’s public policies and the growing international appreciation for the quality, diversity, and originality of Uruguayan cinematic works.

Uruguayan productions and co-productions have previously been featured in various sections of the Locarno Film Festival, showcasing the country’s filmmaking talent on an international stage. The festival has served as a platform for films such as “The Enemies of Pain,” “Norberto’s Deadline,” “The Guest Room,” and “El lugar del hijo,” among others.

Artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro highlighted the importance of turning attention to Uruguay in the current landscape, emphasizing the need for new voices in cinema. The selection process for First Look 2026 is currently open, with producers required to submit a rough cut of at least 60 minutes at any stage of post-production. The principal production company must be based in Uruguay, and the selection and jury members will be announced in July.

In conclusion, First Look’s focus on Uruguay at the 79th Locarno Film Festival promises to be a significant moment for Uruguayan cinema, showcasing the country’s filmmaking talent to a global audience. The program’s commitment to supporting emerging filmmakers and promoting international collaboration underscores its importance in the arthouse cinema landscape.
