Aerial Art Installation to Transform Downtown Denver Skyline

A city agency is investing over $625,000 in a temporary art installation set to captivate downtown Denver visitors and boost the local economy this summer. The Skynet Art Series, curated by Denver Arts & Venues, will unveil an “aerial art installation” featuring multiple kinetic sculptures suspended above the streets. These colorful sculptures, designed to sway gracefully in the wind, will form ethereal canopies that interact with the surrounding architecture, light, and weather in prominent public spaces.

Following the success of a similar project in Green Mountain Falls by artist Patrick Shearn, which drew over 100,000 visitors and increased sales tax revenue by 36%, the Denver Downtown Development Authority is excited to bring this unique art experience to Denver. The previous installation, “Off the Beaten Path,” showcased a 6,000 square-foot sculpture resembling luminous brushstrokes dancing across the sky.

Denver officials anticipate the Skynet Art Series will generate buzz and foot traffic in the city center, connecting multiple installation sites along RTD routes between Union Station and Civic Center Station for a four-month period. As part of ongoing efforts to revitalize downtown Denver post-pandemic, this art initiative is poised to complement other attractions like pop-up performances, live music, and local markets scheduled for summer weekends.

Renowned artist Patrick Shearn, known for his large-scale installations inspired by nature, will bring his creative vision to Denver’s skyline. With previous works mimicking natural elements like butterfly wings, ocean waves, and tree canopies, Shearn’s installations have captivated audiences worldwide.
