Costa Rican authorities have provided new details on the tragic murder of Kurt Van Dyke, a California native from a renowned surfing family. According to the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), Van Dyke was held captive by at least two individuals who broke into his home over the weekend. Armed with a firearm, the suspects forced Van Dyke and his girlfriend into a room while they ransacked the house for valuables.
The authorities revealed that the intruders allegedly killed Van Dyke and fled the scene. His girlfriend, although not seriously injured, was left zip-tied and beaten. Van Dyke’s lifeless body was discovered under the bed, covered with a sheet, and a knife was placed next to his head. The preliminary cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation, with multiple stab wounds also found on his body.
The incident took place in the Cahuita sector of Talamanca, Limón province, around 10:50 a.m. on Saturday. Van Dyke, a 66-year-old U.S. citizen and beloved surfer affectionately known as “King,” was pronounced dead at the scene. The authorities are continuing their investigation into the case to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
Van Dyke’s body has been sent to the Forensic Morgue for further examination to ascertain the cause and manner of death. The U.S. embassy is reportedly making arrangements to repatriate his remains back to California. His brother, Peter Van Dyke, expressed disbelief at the tragic event, stating that he had recently spoken to Kurt and found him in good spirits.
Peter Van Dyke also mentioned that his brother had several business partners in Costa Rica, where he had been residing since the mid-1980s. He acknowledged that there were individuals in the area who may have harbored ill feelings towards Kurt, indicating a possible motive for the heinous crime.
