Plattform Produktion, the renowned Swedish production company behind award-winning films like Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” and “The Square,” has joined forces with Norway’s Motlys to co-produce a gripping psychological thriller series titled “A Phone Rings in the Middle of the Night” (“En Telefon Ringer Mitt i Natten”).
This marks Plattform’s debut in the realm of TV fiction, with the four-part series being selected for the prestigious Berlin Co-Production Market’s Co-Pro Series. Scheduled to be pitched on February 17, the project has already garnered interest from commissioning editors, distributors, and series financiers on the lookout for groundbreaking drama with global appeal.
Helmed by Plattform partner Mikel Cee Karlsson, “A Phone Rings in the Middle of the Night” is currently in advanced development, with strong support from Swedish Television, regional fund Film i Väst, the Swedish Film Institute, and MEDIA Development. Acclaimed Swedish actors Henrik Dorsin and Shanti Roney are set to star in the series, adding to the anticipation surrounding the project.
The story unfolds on a summer night in a quaint Swedish town, where Mats, a beloved middle-aged dance band drummer, receives a disturbing text message that sets off a chain of terrifying events for him and his family. What starts as random abuse soon reveals a dark, interconnected tale dating back over four decades, delving into themes of revenge, truth, and morality.
“Inspired by true events, I aimed to craft a revenge drama unlike any other,” shared writer-director Karlsson. “Through four interconnected parts and shifting perspectives, the series explores the blurred lines between victim and perpetrator, past and present, posing challenging questions about the nature of revenge and the ownership of truth.”
For Plattform, known for its commitment to original storytelling and international appeal, “A Phone Rings in the Middle of the Night” adds to a diverse slate that includes projects like Ninja Thyberg’s “Pleasure” and the acclaimed “Fantastic Machine.” Motlys, on the other hand, brings its expertise in filmmaker-driven narratives with global resonance, boasting a track record that includes hit series like “Home Ground” and acclaimed films like “Thelma” and “Louder Than Bombs.”
The collaboration between Plattform and Motlys promises to deliver a series that pushes boundaries, challenges conventions, and captivates audiences with its powerful storytelling and compelling performances. Stay tuned for more updates on “A Phone Rings in the Middle of the Night” as it continues to evolve and make waves in the world of television drama.
