The batteries are crushed, and the silver is extracted through a chemical process. The remaining materials, such as zinc and steel, are also recovered and recycled.

Lithium coin cells are shredded to separate the metal casing from the lithium inside. The lithium is then processed and reused in new batteries or other products. The metal casing is recycled as scrap metal.

Zinc-air batteries are broken down to recover the zinc and potassium hydroxide inside. The zinc can be reused in new batteries or other products, while the potassium hydroxide can be recycled for industrial use.

Once the valuable materials have been recovered, the remaining materials from the button cell batteries are disposed of properly to prevent any harm to the environment.

Recycling button cell batteries is important for conserving valuable resources, preventing environmental harm, and ensuring the safety of children and the community. By properly recycling these small but powerful batteries, we can make a big impact on the health of our planet. The process of recycling and reusing batteries is crucial for environmental sustainability and resource conservation. The silver found in batteries can be purified and repurposed for various applications such as new batteries, electronics, jewelry, or industrial uses. Similarly, lithium coin cells are recycled to recover valuable materials like lithium, manganese, and steel parts. Zinc-air batteries are also processed to reuse zinc in new batteries or for galvanizing purposes.

In order to regulate the recycling of batteries, many states have implemented Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws that cover button cells. As of early 2026, eight states and the District of Columbia have enacted battery EPR laws with comprehensive programs that include button cells. These laws require battery producers to fund collection and recycling systems, ensuring that the responsibility does not fall on taxpayers. The implementation dates for these programs are staggered between 2026 and 2029, depending on the state.

It is essential for consumers to play their part in the circular economy by responsibly disposing of button cell batteries. Despite their small size, these batteries contain valuable materials that make recycling economically viable. Additionally, proper disposal is necessary to prevent child safety hazards and fire risks. Consumers can utilize professional replacement services that include recycling, utilize designated drop-off locations, or opt for mail-in programs to ensure that button cell batteries are managed responsibly at the end of their useful life.

By participating in battery recycling programs and choosing environmentally conscious disposal methods, individuals can contribute to a more sustainable future and help conserve valuable resources for future generations.
