Ocean Vuong: Sống – A Photography Exhibition Review

Ocean Vuong, known for his exceptional writing and poetry, has recently made a splash in the art world with his solo photography exhibition at the Center for Photography at Woodstock. Titled Sống, which translates to “to live” in Vietnamese, the exhibition delves into the New England immigrant experience, particularly focusing on Vuong’s relationship with his brother Nicky following their mother’s passing in 2019.

Vuong’s journey into photography began in his teenage years when a friend handed him a Nikon camera at a basement punk show. Since then, his photography has evolved alongside his writing, culminating in this poignant exhibition. The artist book accompanying the show showcases Vuong’s deep understanding of photo history, drawing inspiration from renowned photographers such as Nicéphore Niépce, Garry Winogrand, and Raymond Meeks.

The portraits of Nicky featured in the exhibition are visually striking, capturing moments of vulnerability and melancholy. However, some images veer towards being overly posed, detracting from the raw emotion they aim to convey. Despite this, Vuong’s keen eye for detail shines through in his capturing of everyday moments that resonate deeply with viewers. From a crumpled Dunkin’ Donuts bag in his mother’s nail salon to handwritten life goals on a whiteboard, Vuong’s photographs evoke a sense of nostalgia and introspection.

One of the standout aspects of Vuong’s work is his depiction of New England landscapes, portraying the intersection of urban decay and natural beauty. These images resonate with viewers familiar with the postindustrial landscapes of their hometowns, capturing the essence of forgotten histories and untold stories. Vuong’s ability to infuse his photographs with a sense of longing and mystery elevates his work beyond mere visual documentation.

Ocean Vuong: Sống is a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant exhibition that invites viewers to reflect on themes of loss, memory, and the passage of time. Through his evocative photography, Vuong invites us to ponder the lives of those who came before us and the legacies they leave behind. The exhibition will be on display at the Center for Photography at Woodstock until May 10th, offering a unique opportunity to experience the world through the lens of a truly multi-talented artist.
