New Jersey’s acting attorney general, Jennifer Davenport, has made the decision not to appeal the dismissal of racketeering charges against Democratic power broker George E. Norcross III and his co-defendants. This move comes after a three-judge appellate panel upheld a state judge’s ruling to toss out the criminal charges.

The indictment, which was initially brought by former Attorney General Matt Platkin under the administration of Governor Phil Murphy, alleged that Norcross and five others were involved in an enterprise aimed at using their political influence to shape legislation for their own benefit. However, the state judge determined that the allegations did not meet the threshold for criminal coercion or extortion and were also time-barred.

In a statement released by the attorney general’s office, it was mentioned that the decision not to pursue further legal action against Norcross and his co-defendants was based on the need to allocate prosecutorial resources to other pressing matters. The office reiterated its commitment to combating public corruption, especially in a climate where trust in government institutions is eroding.

The charges against Norcross had sparked controversy, with the power broker vehemently denying any wrongdoing and attributing the indictment to political motivations. Despite the legal battle, Norcross has maintained his innocence throughout the process.

George Norcross III is a prominent figure in New Jersey politics, having served as the executive chairman of Conner Strong & Buckelew, a leading insurance firm. He has wielded significant influence within the Democratic Party in the state, previously holding positions such as Democratic National Committee member and head of the Camden County Democratic Party.

Overall, the decision not to appeal the dismissal of the racketeering charges signifies the end of a legal saga that has captivated the political landscape in New Jersey. It remains to be seen how this development will impact Norcross’s standing in the state’s political arena moving forward.
