U.S. court bars OpenAI from using ‘Cameo’

A recent ruling by a federal district court in Northern California has favored Cameo, a platform that offers personalized video messages from celebrities, in a trademark dispute against OpenAI. The court has ordered OpenAI to cease using the name “Cameo” in its products and features, citing potential user confusion.

OpenAI had been utilizing the “Cameo” name for its AI-powered video generation app, Sora 2, which allowed users to insert digital likenesses of themselves into AI-generated videos. However, the court found that the name was too similar to Cameo’s brand, leading to the decision to prohibit OpenAI from using it. Despite OpenAI’s argument that “Cameo” was merely descriptive, the court determined that it suggested rather than described the feature.

Following the court’s ruling, OpenAI was compelled to rename the feature to “Characters” after a temporary restraining order was granted to Cameo in November. CEO of Cameo, Steven Galanis, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the importance of protecting the company’s brand integrity and the trust of its creators.

In response to the ruling, an OpenAI spokesperson expressed disagreement with the assertion that exclusive ownership could be claimed over the word “cameo,” indicating plans to continue making their case. OpenAI has been embroiled in several intellectual property disputes in recent months, including a decision to discard “IO” branding for its upcoming hardware products and a lawsuit by digital library app OverDrive over the use of “Sora” for its video generation app.

The company’s legal battles extend to conflicts with various artists, creatives, and media groups globally over copyright violations. As OpenAI navigates these legal challenges, it remains committed to defending its position and intellectual property rights. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving legal landscape.
