Amazon’s Audible Introduces Immersion Reading Feature for eBooks and Audiobooks

Just days after Spotify made headlines with its move into physical book sales and audiobooks, Amazon-owned Audible has followed suit by launching a new feature that combines ebooks with audiobooks for a seamless reading experience.

The company unveiled its “immersion reading” feature in the Audible app, allowing users to simultaneously read the text of an ebook while listening to the audiobook version. This feature enhances engagement with the content and enables users to switch between formats across devices. The text of the ebook is highlighted in real-time as the narration progresses, creating a synchronized reading and listening experience.

Prior to this launch, the Kindle app already offered a similar tool for transitioning between the Audible and ebook versions of a title. Now, Audible users can enjoy the same feature within the Audible app. To utilize the “Read & Listen” mode, customers must own both the ebook and audiobook versions of the book. Additionally, discounted audiobooks will be available to users who own the corresponding ebook.

At the initial launch, hundreds of thousands of titles in various languages, including English, German, Spanish, Italian, and French, will be supported by the “Read & Listen” feature. The rollout will begin in the U.S. and expand to the U.K., Australia, and Germany in the coming months.

Audible will automatically identify eligible titles by matching Kindle ebooks with audiobooks in its app, streamlining the process for users to access the combined reading and listening experience.

While some customers have previously used Alexa to narrate ebooks from their Kindle library, the professional narration provided by audiobooks offers a more engaging experience. Amazon aims to increase book sales across formats by offering the audiobook add-on at a discounted rate for ebook owners.

The combination of reading and listening has been shown to improve focus and comprehension, leading to increased engagement among users. According to Audible’s internal data, customers who read and listen consume nearly double the amount of content per month compared to audiobook-only customers.

Students, language learners, and avid readers who enjoy switching between reading and listening stand to benefit the most from this feature. Additionally, having a narrator introduce characters by name can enhance the overall reading experience, especially for complex narratives like those found in fantasy novels.

Andy Tsao, Chief Product Officer at Audible, expressed excitement about the launch, stating, “Audiobooks count as reading, but now at Audible, you can read with your eyes too. Read & Listen gives book lovers the best of both worlds.” The feature is designed to cater to a wide range of users, from language learners to book enthusiasts seeking a more immersive reading experience.

Amazon assures that the introduction of this feature will not impact publishers’ royalty payments, maintaining a fair distribution of earnings within the industry.
