The Museum at FIT (MFIT) is currently showcasing an exciting exhibition titled “Art X Fashion,” which delves into the intricate relationship between fine art and fashion. Running from February 18 to April 19, 2026, the exhibition features a diverse collection of over 140 garments, accessories, textiles, photographs, and artworks from the museum’s permanent collection.

Curated by Dr. Elizabeth Way, the exhibition challenges conventional notions of visual culture by highlighting the parallel aesthetics of fashion and art from the 18th-century Rococo era to postmodernism. Dr. Christopher Richards, an art and fashion historian, provides a theoretical framework that underscores how fashion has historically collaborated with fine art, drawing inspiration from movements such as Rococo, Neoclassicism, Surrealism, and Pop Art. Designers like Martin Margiela, Rei Kawakubo, Iris van Herpen, and Christian Dior are showcased to illustrate fashion’s innovation, craftsmanship, and cultural impact, positioning it as a form of art in its own right.

The exhibition also explores how artists incorporate fashion into their work. Pieces by Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Sonia Delaunay, and contemporary artists like Kerry James Marshall and Cat Chow demonstrate how art influences design. Historical examples of artist-flâneurs depicted by renowned artists like Manet, Degas, and Renoir showcase how fashion communicated modernity and artistic identity in the 19th century.

“Art X Fashion” further examines how designers reinterpret artistic aesthetics on the body. From Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic Mondrian dresses to Christian Francis Roth’s bold abstractions, the exhibition showcases how artists’ styles are translated into wearable art. Collaborations between designers like Gianni Versace, Grace Wales Bonner, and Louis Vuitton bridge luxury, culture, and artistic practice, emphasizing the enduring dialogue between fashion and art.

To complement the exhibition, the “Art X Fashion” Symposium on March 27 will feature discussions with designers, curators, and artists on the intertwined histories of fashion and art. The Museum at FIT, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, is dedicated to advancing knowledge and appreciation of fashion as a critical cultural force.
