Political Crossroads: Sen. Pete Ricketts Backs His Wife’s Democratic Bid

In an unusual twist of political allegiance, Senator Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) has ventured into uncharted waters by endorsing his wife, Susanne Shore, as she embarks on her campaign as a Democrat for a position on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. This endorsement was publicly declared on Thursday, marking a notable moment in Nebraska politics.

Ricketts expressed his confidence in his wife’s candidacy, proclaiming her to be an “outstanding voice” for the university and highlighting their mutual commitment to making higher education more affordable and accessible. “I typically cast my vote straight down the Republican line, but in 2026, Susanne will be my singular Democratic exception!” he remarked, showcasing the couple’s political divergence.

Shore, who previously served as the First Lady of Nebraska, is eyeing a seat representing Douglas County in Omaha, a position left vacant after the resignation of former Regent Elizabeth O’Connor due to a felony DUI charge. Describing herself as a “Regent-ready” candidate, she cites her experience in university administration, healthcare, and public service as qualifications for the role.

“Our university should function as an engine of innovation, not merely a relic of the past,” Shore stated in a recent declaration. “By prioritizing results over rhetoric, we can ensure our university remains affordable, competitive, and poised to tackle future challenges.”

The political fissure between Ricketts and Shore has been evident for over a decade, with both supporting candidates from opposing parties and contributing to different political causes. Shore acknowledged this dynamic, emphasizing that their differences are both routine and respectful. In an interview with the Nebraska Examiner, she stated that Ricketts has been “nothing but supportive” regarding her aspirations. “He’s shared insights about running for office, and witnessing it firsthand has been enlightening,” she added. “While it feels different to be on this side of the campaign, the experience has been incredible so far.”

Shore also noted that her husband has his own political battles to contend with, as he faces Dan Osborn, an independent and former labor leader from Omaha, in a fiercely contested Nebraska Senate race.

Ricketts has long been a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, aligning closely with many of the administration’s policies. However, he recently distinguished himself as one of the few Republicans to publicly criticize Trump following the release of a racially charged video on social media that depicted former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in an offensive manner. “Even if this was intended as a Lion King meme, any reasonable person can discern the racist undertones,” he posted on X. “The White House, like anyone who errs, should retract this and offer an apology.”
