Guest Idea: Wearing the Change—Transforming Coffee Pods Into Meaningful Jewelry

Simone Cabral, an artist based in Bloomington, IN, has found a unique way to give discarded aluminum coffee pods a second life. By transforming them into handmade jewelry and small art pieces, she is not only creating beautiful pieces but also making a positive impact on the planet.

Each piece of jewelry created by Simone starts with used coffee pods collected from her community. These pods, originally intended for single use, are cleaned, sanitized, flattened, cut, folded, and shaped entirely by hand before they can be transformed into wearable art. Despite arriving dented, stained, and inconsistent, Simone sees these imperfections as part of the material’s history and embraces them in her designs.

Working with coffee pods presents its own set of challenges, as they are lightweight yet sharp, fragile yet stubborn. Simone has spent time testing how the aluminum responds to pressure, movement, and long-term wear to ensure that the pieces she creates are not only visually appealing but also durable and comfortable for everyday wear.

Simone’s journey into upcycling started in 2021, combining hands-on experimentation with her background as a technician in environmental sanitation. She also received training from a Brazilian jewelry designer, which helped her refine her techniques and translate unconventional materials into intentional, wearable forms. One of the ongoing challenges she faces is building credibility and helping people understand the value of her work, especially when using materials that are often associated with waste.

Nature and place play a central role in Simone’s work, drawing inspiration from both her birthplace in northeast Brazil and her current home in Indiana. The landscapes of these two places influence the shapes, textures, and rhythm of her designs, giving them a unique and organic feel. By sharing the story behind each piece and allowing people to experience the finished product firsthand, Simone helps others see waste not as an endpoint but as something in transition.

Simone primarily reaches people through in-person experiences at art fairs, workshops, and local retail spaces, where she can engage in dialogue about sustainability and the creative process. Her tagline, “Wear the change you want to see,” encapsulates her mission of promoting mindful consumption and encouraging others to look at everyday materials in a new light.

What started as a small experiment at home has evolved into a mindful, independent practice rooted in reuse, intention, and storytelling. Simone’s work serves as a reminder that sustainability can be thoughtful, creative, and accessible, offering a fresh perspective on how we can make a positive impact on the planet through art and design. The world is constantly evolving and changing, with new technologies, scientific discoveries, and cultural shifts shaping the way we live our lives. As we move further into the 21st century, it’s important to take a step back and reflect on the progress we’ve made, as well as the challenges we still face.

One of the most significant advancements in recent years has been the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI). AI has already begun to revolutionize industries such as healthcare, finance, and transportation, with the potential to completely transform the way we work and live. From self-driving cars to personalized medical treatments, AI has the power to improve efficiency, accuracy, and productivity in almost every aspect of our lives.

However, with great power comes great responsibility, and the rise of AI also raises important ethical questions. As AI becomes more sophisticated and autonomous, concerns about privacy, bias, and accountability have come to the forefront. It’s crucial that we develop ethical guidelines and regulations to ensure that AI is used in a way that benefits society as a whole, rather than exacerbating existing inequalities and injustices.

Another major issue facing the world today is climate change. The effects of global warming are becoming increasingly apparent, with rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and biodiversity loss threatening the very foundation of our planet. It’s clear that urgent action is needed to mitigate the impacts of climate change and transition to a more sustainable way of living.

Fortunately, there is growing awareness and activism around the issue of climate change, with individuals, communities, and governments taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint and protect the environment. From renewable energy sources to sustainable agriculture practices, there are countless ways in which we can work together to create a more sustainable future for generations to come.

In addition to technological and environmental challenges, we also continue to grapple with social issues such as inequality, discrimination, and political polarization. As we strive for progress and equality, it’s important to listen to diverse perspectives, engage in meaningful dialogue, and work towards a more inclusive and just society.

Ultimately, the future is full of possibilities and potential, but it’s up to us to shape it in a way that reflects our values and aspirations. By coming together as a global community, we can overcome the challenges that lie ahead and create a world that is more just, sustainable, and prosperous for all.
