Intimate Paintings by Mitchell Johnson on Display at Galerie Mercier in Paris

Renowned American painter Mitchell Johnson is showcasing a collection of 25 intimate paintings at Galerie Mercier in Paris. The exhibition, titled Mitchell Johnson: Personal Color (Selected Small Paintings 1988–2026), will be open to the public from February 28 to March 21, offering a rare glimpse into Johnson’s artistic evolution over nearly four decades.

Johnson’s work is deeply influenced by his surroundings, particularly his experiences in Paris and Cape Cod. These two locations have played a significant role in shaping his artistic style and approach to color, shape, and scale.

Having studied under notable artists like Hans Hofmann and Paul Resika, Johnson’s work is a reflection of the rich legacy of American Modernism. Through his exploration of Hofmann’s theory of push and pull, Johnson seeks to bridge the connection between traditional teaching methods and contemporary American painting.

This will provide art enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to engage with the artist and gain insights into his creative process.

Johnson’s paintings have garnered widespread acclaim and are featured in numerous private collections and museums around the world. His work has also been the subject of museum retrospectives, showcasing the depth and breadth of his artistic vision.
