New York Assembly Member Alex Bores Faces Off Against Pro-AI Super PACs in Congressional Bid

Late last year, New York Assembly member Alex Bores found himself in the crosshairs of a well-funded campaign by a pro-AI super PAC aimed at derailing his congressional aspirations. Leading the Future, backed by over $100 million from prominent supporters such as Andreessen Horowitz, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, AI search startup Perplexity, and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, set its sights on thwarting Bores’ political ambitions.

In response to this formidable opposition, Bores defiantly declared, “bring it on,” showcasing his determination to take on the challenge head-on. Now, with substantial support behind him, he is ready to face the battle ahead.

On the other side of the political spectrum, Public First Action, a PAC fueled by a generous $20 million donation from Anthropic, has stepped in to bolster Bores’ campaign in the race for New York’s 12th congressional district. According to a report by Bloomberg, the committee, also aligned with the pro-AI stance, emphasizes values of transparency, safety standards, and public oversight in its advocacy.

Meanwhile, Bores continues to face relentless attacks from the industry-backed PAC, Leading the Future, which has already invested $1.1 million in negative ads targeting him. The primary point of contention stems from Bores’ sponsorship of New York’s RAISE Act, a legislation that mandates major AI developers to disclose their safety protocols and report instances of serious misuse of their technologies.
