Homeless Man Who Stole Elderly Woman’s Cane Is a Registered Sex Offender

During a hearing on Saturday, court officials revealed that Kurtis Mcvae, the homeless man accused of stealing an 88-year-old woman’s cane and knocking her over in Union Square, is a registered sex offender from Wisconsin and a parole violator.

Mcvae, 36, appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court with a scruffy beard and mustache, wearing a white T-shirt, green flannel jacket, forest green sweatpants, and grey sneakers.

Kurtis Mcvae allegedly stole an 88-year-old woman’s cane and knocked her over while trying to steal her purse, a prosecutor said in court. Robert Miller for NY Post

The incident occurred when Mcvae grabbed the elderly woman’s arm as she was on her way to Target in Union Square, attempting to steal her purse but ending up taking her walking stick. Despite the struggle, the victim held onto her cane and was eventually taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Mcvae’s clothes were photographed by the victim’s health aide, leading to his capture after a wanted poster was created. The court revealed that Mcvae has missed court appearances in the city and is a probation and parole violator.

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Mcvae’s defense attorney stated that he does not have the means to post bail or flee. Mcvae has been working at Macy’s and resides in a Bowery shelter.

Addressing the court, Mcvae mentioned his employment multiple times, indicating that he missed court dates due to misplaced paperwork.

Judge Mennin set his bail at $7,500 cash, $30,000 bond, and $25,000 insurance company bond, leading to Mcvae being sent to Rikers Island.

The victim, when contacted at home, stated that she is feeling better but declined to provide further comments.
