Microsoft made history with the release of Windows XP in 2001, featuring the iconic default desktop wallpaper “Bliss.” This image of rolling hills in Sonoma County, California, became the most viewed photograph in the world. Now, Microsoft is on a quest to find the next iconic landscape wallpaper for Windows. Teaming up with the creative agency Superdigital, Microsoft enlisted seven international photographers to capture stunning landscapes using Surface devices.

Whitney Wolf, Superdigital director of strategy, highlighted the opportunity for Microsoft to tap into nostalgia for the brand with this new contest. The goal was to create a wallpaper that could rival the popularity of “Bliss” and resonate with users around the world. The seven winning selections were chosen through a fan voting process, showcasing a diverse range of landscapes from different parts of the globe.

The original “Bliss” wallpaper was captured by National Geographic photographer Charles O’Rear in 1996. Microsoft reportedly paid a significant sum to acquire the image rights, cementing its status as the default background for Windows XP. O’Rear stumbled upon the picturesque scene while driving on the Sonoma Highway, showcasing the beauty of the California landscape.

In contrast, the recent contest challenged photographers to use 11th Edition Surface Pros and AI technology to capture their perfect shot. The question arises whether AI assistance can ever replicate the magic of a spontaneous moment captured by a human photographer. Each winning photograph tells a unique story, from snowy landscapes in Alaska to misty streams in Scotland.

The photographers traveled far and wide to capture these breathtaking images, from the Horizontal Falls in Australia to the serene Loire Valley Chateau in France. Whether it’s the silhouette of Mount Fuji at sunset or the high-contrast shot of the Allgäu region in Germany, each photograph offers a glimpse into the beauty of our world.

Overall, Microsoft’s quest for the next iconic wallpaper showcases the power of photography to evoke emotion and inspire awe. These images have the potential to become the new face of Windows, capturing the imagination of users worldwide. As technology continues to evolve, the art of photography remains a timeless form of expression that can transcend boundaries and connect us to the world around us.
