Uber has recently announced the launch of a new division called Uber Autonomous Solutions, aimed at providing comprehensive support for autonomous vehicle makers. This new initiative is designed to assist companies operating in the robotaxi, self-driving truck, and sidewalk delivery robot industries with software and support services.

The company has been quietly working on this project for several years, forming partnerships with nearly two dozen autonomous vehicle technology companies across various use cases. These partnerships include companies like Lucid, Nuro, Waabi, and WeRide, among others. Uber has also invested $100 million in building fast-charging, autonomous-vehicle charging stations and launched Uber AV Labs, a specialized engineering team focused on gathering data for robotaxi partners.

Uber’s goal with this new division is to make itself indispensable to autonomous vehicle tech teams. By providing operational support in areas such as demand generation, rider experience, customer support, and fleet operations, Uber aims to help partners reduce costs per mile and accelerate their market entry. The company plans to scale robotaxi deployments to more than 15 cities by the end of the year.

Andrew MacDonald, Uber’s President and COO, believes that the success of autonomous vehicles depends on their commercial viability, and Uber aims to play a significant role in achieving this goal. The company will handle infrastructure tasks like training data, mapping, fleet financing, and regulatory services, as well as manage complex events and venues for robotaxis and other autonomous vehicles.

In addition to infrastructure support, Uber’s new division will focus on user experience, including customer support and fleet management. The company plans to provide remote assistance, insurance coverage, and human support for AVs operating in the real world. This comprehensive approach aims to address potential challenges and ensure the successful integration of autonomous vehicles into the transportation ecosystem.

Uber’s move into autonomous solutions comes at a critical time for the company, following the sale of its in-house AV development unit in 2020. By forming strategic partnerships and investments with leading autonomous vehicle companies, Uber is positioning itself for long-term success in the evolving mobility market. The company’s commitment to innovation and collaboration underscores its dedication to shaping the future of transportation through autonomous technology.
