Tech Giants’ Efforts to Boost AI Adoption in India Shift Towards Paid Subscriptions

India has emerged as a key market for generative AI applications, surpassing the U.S. in app downloads in 2025, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. This growth has attracted the attention of tech giants like OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity, who have been offering free premium services to accelerate user growth in the price-sensitive Indian market. These companies have also shown support for India’s ambitions to become a global AI hub, as evidenced by their participation in a recent AI summit in New Delhi.

However, the era of free promotions may be coming to an end as some companies, such as Perplexity and OpenAI, have started to wind down their free offerings in India. This shift marks a crucial moment as these companies seek to convert newly acquired users into paying subscribers in one of the world’s fastest-growing AI markets.

Despite the significant increase in app downloads, India still lags behind in AI app revenue, accounting for only 1% of in-app purchases despite driving 20% of global GenAI app downloads. This disparity highlights the challenges of monetization in a market driven by rapid adoption but low revenue generation.

The surge in AI app adoption in India has been fueled by a combination of new product launches and upgrades to existing platforms. Leading chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity have seen rapid growth, with viral interest in AI-generated content further driving adoption. However, the transition from user acquisition to revenue generation has proven challenging, with a decline in in-app purchase revenue observed in late 2025.

ChatGPT remains a dominant player in the Indian market, accounting for over 60% of GenAI in-app revenue. Changes in its pricing strategy can significantly impact the overall market performance, underscoring the importance of pricing and monetization strategies in the Indian AI landscape.

With India boasting a massive digital user base of over a billion internet users and 700 million smartphone owners, it presents a lucrative market for AI services. However, user engagement in India still trails behind more mature markets, highlighting the need for sustained engagement and retention strategies to drive revenue growth.

As AI firms navigate the evolving market dynamics in India, pricing pressure is expected to remain high due to the country’s young and value-conscious user base. Lower-cost tiers, telecom bundles, and micro-transaction models are likely to play a crucial role in driving long-term user retention and revenue growth.

Despite the challenges, ChatGPT continues to lead the Indian market with 180 million monthly active users, followed by Google’s Gemini, Perplexity, and Meta AI. The increasing competition and user base in India underscore the importance for AI companies to convert rapid user adoption into sustainable revenue streams.

As the AI landscape in India evolves, firms like Google, OpenAI, and Perplexity are facing the dual challenge of expanding their user base while successfully monetizing their services. The shift towards paid subscriptions marks a new chapter in India’s AI journey, where the focus is now on converting free users into loyal paying customers.
