New Director Appointed at Louvre Museum Following Resignation of Laurence des Cars

A new era has begun at the Louvre Museum with the swift appointment of Christophe Leribault as the new director, just one day after Laurence des Cars stepped down on February 24. French President Emmanuel Macron selected Leribault, an accomplished art historian and experienced museum leader who has been at the helm of the Palace of Versailles since 2024, to take charge of the crisis-stricken Paris institution.

The decision to bring Leribault on board comes in the aftermath of a high-profile jewel heist that took place at the Louvre last October, which exposed significant infrastructural and surveillance vulnerabilities under des Cars’ leadership. Leribault is now tasked with overseeing the implementation of “Nouvelle Renaissance,” a comprehensive plan aimed at modernizing and strengthening the museum in the face of ongoing challenges.

During a recent press conference on February 25, French government spokesperson Maud Bregeon emphasized Leribault’s role in spearheading crucial projects for the future of the Louvre, including enhancing security measures and advancing the “Louvre New Renaissance” initiative. With his extensive experience in museum management, Leribault is well-equipped to navigate the complex landscape of one of the world’s most renowned cultural institutions.

This is not the first time Leribault, aged 62, has followed in des Cars’ footsteps as a museum leader. He previously succeeded her as president of the Musée d’Orsay in 2021 when she assumed the directorship of the Louvre. Prior to that, Leribault held leadership positions at the Petit Palais art museum and the Musée Delacroix, both located in Paris.

Leribault’s return to the Louvre marks a homecoming of sorts, as he previously served as the deputy director of the museum’s Department of Graphic Arts two decades ago. His deep familiarity with the institution coupled with his track record of successful museum management positions him as a fitting choice to guide the Louvre through a period of transformation and renewal.

As Leribault takes the reins at the Louvre, all eyes are on him to navigate the challenges ahead and steer the museum towards a new chapter of growth and innovation. With his leadership and vision, the Louvre is poised to embark on a journey of reinvention and resilience under his guidance.
