Google Acquires Robotics Software Company Intrinsic to Advance Physical AI
Google has taken a significant step forward in the realm of physical artificial intelligence by incorporating a well-known robotics software platform into its operations. Intrinsic, a company owned by Alphabet, focuses on developing AI models and software specifically tailored to enhance the accessibility of industrial robots. The recent announcement revealed that Intrinsic will now be joining forces with Google, operating as a distinct entity within the tech giant while collaborating closely with Google DeepMind and leveraging Google’s Gemini AI models and cloud services.
Although the specifics of the deal, including funding and purchase price, have not been disclosed by Alphabet, the integration of Intrinsic into Google marks a notable milestone in the evolution of AI technology. Intrinsic originally emerged as an independent company under Alphabet’s umbrella in 2021 after undergoing five years of incubation within X, the company’s experimental research division. Notable companies that have graduated from X in the past include Waymo, a leading robotaxi company, and Wing, a pioneering drone delivery service.
Wendy Tan White has been at the helm of Intrinsic as CEO since its spinout in 2021, leading the company through a series of strategic moves to expand its capabilities. In April 2022, Intrinsic made headlines by acquiring Vicarious, another prominent player in the robotics software sector that had previously secured substantial funding from investors like Jeff Bezos. This strategic acquisition was followed by the purchase of key divisions of Open Robotics, a nonprofit organization renowned for its contributions to the robotics industry.
Despite its rapid expansion, Intrinsic faced a setback in January 2023 when it had to downsize its workforce by 20%. However, the company quickly regrouped and unveiled its first product, Flowstate, a software platform designed to simplify robotics workflows for developers with limited experience in the field. With a focus on accessibility, Intrinsic continued to refine its technology, enhancing simulation capabilities and launching the Intrinsic Vision AI model in late 2025.
In a strategic move to revolutionize electronics manufacturing, Intrinsic announced a joint venture with Foxconn in October 2025. This collaboration aims to develop intelligent robots for factory automation, signaling a shift towards advanced manufacturing processes. Now, with the backing of Google’s AI expertise, Intrinsic is poised to accelerate its mission of democratizing physical AI for a wider range of industries and developers.
According to Wendy Tan White, the partnership with Google will unlock the full potential of physical AI, transforming production processes and driving innovation in manufacturing. Industry leaders like Jensen Huang of Nvidia and Cristiano Amon of Qualcomm view physical AI as a pivotal advancement that will shape the future of AI technology and its commercial applications.
