This week on JS’s founder-focused podcast, Build Mode, Isabelle Johannessen sits down with Sarah Lucena, the CEO and co-founder of Mappa, a groundbreaking behavioral intelligence platform that leverages voice AI technology to decode human behavior in less than 60 seconds.

Lucena’s inspiration for Mappa stemmed from her struggles in building a marketing team and realizing that traditional hiring practices based on resumes and gut instincts often led to mismatched hires. Determined to find a better solution, she embarked on a journey to create a unique dataset derived from hundreds of interviews to analyze behavior through speech patterns. This led to the realization that successful hires are not just about qualifications on paper but also about compatibility.

In the podcast interview, Lucena emphasizes the importance of understanding compatibility in hiring decisions. She explains, “There’s no trait that’s good or bad inherently; it’s more of what environment do you put that person in, and what roles are better aligned with people’s tendencies and styles.”

Mappa is driven by an all Latinx team who have experienced firsthand the challenges of being overlooked due to biases or lack of traditional experiences. Lucena describes them as underdogs who are passionate about addressing this issue and creating opportunities for others in the tech industry.

For early-stage founders navigating the hiring process, Lucena advises taking the time to ensure compatibility from the start to avoid the pitfalls of hiring, firing, and rehiring for the same role. This approach can save time and resources in the long run and lead to more successful team dynamics.

In conclusion, Mappa’s innovative approach to hiring based on behavioral analysis highlights the importance of considering compatibility in building effective teams. By focusing on this key aspect, founders can make more informed decisions that lead to better outcomes for their businesses.

Isabelle Johannessen hosts the Build Mode podcast, produced and edited by Maggie Nye, with Audience Development led by Morgan Little. Special thanks to the Foundry and Cheddar video teams for their contributions to the podcast.
