Google Partners with Form Energy for Innovative Battery Technology

Google recently announced its collaboration with Form Energy, a startup known for its groundbreaking iron-air battery technology. This partnership aims to power a new data center in Minnesota using a combination of wind, solar, and Form Energy’s unique battery solution.

The cost of this ambitious project is estimated to be around $1 billion, according to a report by The Information. Form Energy’s iron-air battery has the capacity to provide a continuous 300 megawatts of electricity for up to 100 hours. This innovative technology relies on a process where oxygen is introduced into the cells to rust iron, releasing electrons in the process. The battery will play a crucial role in stabilizing the power supply from 1.4 gigawatts of wind power and 200 megawatts of solar power.

Form Energy has been developing this technology for several years and has recently established a production facility in West Virginia to manufacture these advanced batteries. The collaboration with Google marks a significant milestone for the startup, as it secures a major customer for its cutting-edge energy storage solution.

Following this partnership, Form Energy CEO Mateo Jaramillo has revealed plans to raise a $500 million funding round to support the company’s growth. With a total funding of $1.4 billion to date, Form Energy is gearing up for a potential IPO next year, positioning itself as a key player in the renewable energy sector.
