Former Kansas City Chiefs player Gehrig Dieter has come out in support of his former teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce after their restaurant, 1587 Prime, was hit with a lawsuit by 1587 Sneakers for trademark infringement. The sneaker company alleges that Mahomes, Kelce, and their business partner, Noble 33, have been using their name and selling clothing with the number “1587” on it without permission.

In response to the lawsuit, Adam King, co-founder of 1587 Sneakers, took to Instagram to share his thoughts. He expressed pride in the brand’s origins and the cultural significance it holds for the AAPI community. King emphasized the hard work and creativity that went into building 1587 into a national brand representing AAPI history and resilience.

However, Dieter questioned the popularity of 1587 Sneakers prior to the lawsuit, insinuating that the brand may have been relatively unknown before going up against two high-profile NFL players like Mahomes and Kelce. The restaurant’s name, 1587 Prime, was inspired by Mahomes and Kelce’s jersey numbers (15 and 87, respectively), while the sneaker brand’s name references the year Filipino sailors first arrived in the U.S.

Looking ahead to the 2026 NFL season, Mahomes is recovering from a major injury and aiming to return for Week 1, while Kelce’s future with the Chiefs is uncertain. Despite a disappointing 6-11 record in the previous season, the Chiefs are looking to bounce back and make another run at the Super Bowl, with Mahomes and Kelce leading the charge.

In conclusion, the legal battle between 1587 Sneakers and the owners of 1587 Prime continues, but the support from former teammates like Dieter and the ongoing success of Mahomes and Kelce on the field suggest that they will weather this storm and come out stronger. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
