Josh Burnett is still trying to process the fact that he has won his second Tour of Southland in three years. The 24-year-old put on a strong performance on the final day of the 68th edition of the Southland tour, joining a select group of riders who have won the prestigious event multiple times.

After finishing third in the morning’s individual time trial in Winton, Burnett’s teammates supported him during the final 77km stage to Invercargill’s Queens Park, battling strong winds to secure the title.

His victory places him alongside cycling greats such as Warwick Dalton, Tino Tabak, and Hayden Roulston. Despite this achievement, Burnett humbly acknowledges that he still has a lot to prove in his career.

Reflecting on his win, Burnett expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he received from the Southland community. He noted the pressure of living up to expectations after his historic win in 2022 but credited his team for helping him navigate the challenges of the race.

Australian rider Graeme Frislie claimed the stage eight victory in Gala St, with Declan Trezise securing the under 23 classification. Burnett also clinched the King of the Mountain jersey, while Bailey O’Donnell won the Sprint Ace classification, and PowerNet emerged victorious in the teams classification.

In a touching tribute, Southland’s Luke Macpherson won the over 35 classification, dedicated to the late Ken Lasenby.
