NYPD Detective Promoted After Naming K9 Dog After Slain Father

An emotional ceremony took place at One Police Plaza where 11 members of the NYPD were promoted to detective second-grade, including Katrina J. Narvaez. Narvaez, 38, made headlines for naming her K9 dog after her father, Lt. Frederico Narvaez, who was tragically killed in the line of duty almost 30 years ago. The promotion ceremony was presided over by Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Katrina was just a young girl of 9 when her father was fatally shot while responding to a domestic incident in Flatbush on October 18, 1996. Despite the heartbreak of losing her father, Katrina was inspired by his dedication to the NYPD and the community. She shared that her father would be proud of her achievements and commitment to following in his footsteps.

After her father’s passing, Katrina had the opportunity to connect with her father’s colleagues in the NYPD. Through their stories and experiences, she gained a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting and serving the people of New York City. This exposure ignited a desire in her to join the force and make a difference.

Katrina joined the police academy in January 2013 and served in various roles within the NYPD, including the domestic violence unit. Her love for animals led her to the K9 unit, where she worked with a Vapor Wake K9 dog trained to detect guns and explosives. She underwent training in Alabama to prepare for her partnership with the K9, a wire-haired pointer/Labrador mix.

One of the most touching moments in Katrina’s career was when she had the opportunity to name her K9 partner after her father. She affectionately called him Freddy and described him as her best friend. The bond between them was evident, as they worked together tirelessly to keep the city safe.

As Freddy approaches retirement age at 9 years old, Katrina will soon be paired with a new K9 partner. Despite the upcoming change, Katrina and her loved ones are celebrating her well-deserved promotion. She expressed her gratitude for the support of her family, friends, and colleagues both within and outside the NYPD.

Katrina’s journey from a young girl inspired by her father’s legacy to a dedicated NYPD detective is a testament to her resilience and commitment to service. Her story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and the importance of honoring their memory.
