Republican state Rep. Gabe Evans maintained his lead over U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo in the closely contested race for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District as the final results slowly trickled in.

As of 12:29 p.m. on Saturday, Evans had a lead of 1,995 votes over Caraveo, with Evans securing approximately 48.9% of the 313,676 ballots counted so far compared to Caraveo’s 48.3%.

The 8th Congressional District, encompassing parts of Adams, Larimer, and Weld counties, holds significant importance in the battle for control of the House of Representatives, with Republicans aiming to maintain a slim majority.

While Evans surged ahead of Caraveo on Friday, the race remains tight with a significant number of ballots still pending in Adams County, where Caraveo currently leads by over 20,000 votes. The outcome could shift as more ballots are tallied. Larimer County has completed its initial count, but Weld County’s final count remains uncertain.

Representatives from both campaigns expressed optimism, with Alan Philp from Evans’ campaign stating that they anticipated completing the initial ballot count by Saturday evening. Kevin Porter of Caraveo’s campaign echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the closeness of the race.

“It’s clear that this race is too close to call at the moment,” Porter remarked.
