In a masterclass of political miscalculation, House Republicans may have just handed their opponents the perfect opportunity to counteract their attempts to deflect attention from the Epstein scandal involving former President Donald Trump—by subpoenaing Bill Clinton.

Rep. James Comer (R-KY), chair of the House Oversight Committee, seems to be following a playbook that was clearly penned by Trump himself, aimed at shifting the spotlight of scandal from Trump to Clinton. This strategy, however, reeks of desperation and naiveté.

Trump’s previous success in the 2016 election, where he managed to make the campaign about his opponent, Hillary Clinton, while simultaneously dodging his own controversies, appears to have inspired a repeat of this tactic in 2023. Yet, what worked in a different political landscape may not hold water now.

By invoking the Clintons once again, Trump demonstrates his penchant for recycling old strategies—because, let’s face it, originality isn’t his strong suit. In a bid to tackle the Epstein issue, he seems to have directed his Republican allies back to familiar territory.

The decision by House Republicans to subpoena Bill Clinton has set a precedent that could very well backfire on them.

Alarm bells should have sounded when both Bill and Hillary Clinton agreed to testify before the committee. This was a clear indicator that the Republicans might have underestimated their opponents’ resolve. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) hinted at impending repercussions for Republicans should the Democrats reclaim control of the House.

Stay tuned for more insights into the strategies and plans that Democrats have in store for Trump.
