After enjoying immense success as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars in the 1990s and early 2000s, Jim Carrey took a long hiatus from acting. However, he made a comeback to the big screen after a four-year break to star in the 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog. In the movie and its two sequels released in 2022 and 2024, Carrey portrayed the villainous Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik.

Carrey’s iconic face is not prominently featured in the films, as he embodies a more cartoonish mad-scientist persona for his character. This departure from his usual on-screen appearance may come as a surprise to fans who are used to seeing him in his comedic roles.

In a December 2024 interview, the The Truman Show star shared his reasons for returning to acting for the Sonic franchise. “I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius. Which is a bit of a stretch,” he humorously remarked. “And, you know, it’s just I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly.”
