Amazon, the US-based retail giant, is making significant changes to its fee structure in India to benefit sellers and customers alike. Starting from 16 March, Amazon will remove referral fees on products priced below Rs1,000, covering a vast array of over 125 million items. This marks a tenfold expansion from last year’s policy, which applied to products priced under Rs300 across 135 categories.

The revised fee structure is expected to slash total selling fees by up to 70% for merchants, providing a significant cost-saving opportunity. Additionally, Easy Ship charges will decrease by more than 20% for items priced below Rs300, further incentivizing sellers to utilize Amazon’s fulfillment services.

Amazon India has seen substantial growth in its seller base, with nearly 1.7 million sellers onboarded since the implementation of the previous fee waiver. This growth has been particularly notable in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, showcasing the platform’s accessibility and appeal to a diverse range of sellers.

The expanded exemption covers a wide range of everyday merchandise, including clothing, electronics, home goods, and toys. Sellers stand to benefit greatly from the fee reductions, with examples such as a fashion jewelry item priced at Rs999 saving sellers Rs224 per unit, and earphones priced at Rs798 saving Rs139 per unit.

Easy Ship, Amazon’s India-specific fulfillment service, allows sellers to dispatch products from their own premises while Amazon handles collection and delivery. This service has proven to be a valuable asset for sellers looking to streamline their operations and improve customer satisfaction.

The fee cuts are part of Amazon’s broader strategy to lower entry barriers for new sellers and empower existing merchants to reinvest their savings into their businesses. The company has also introduced AI-based tools to simplify seller activities such as creating listings, managing inventory, and analyzing customer data, further enhancing the selling experience on the platform.

In a statement, Amazon emphasized the positive impact of the fee reductions on sellers, customers, and the Indian economy as a whole. By enabling more small businesses to participate in the digital economy and empowering entrepreneurs in smaller towns and cities, Amazon aims to drive retail growth and foster a thriving e-commerce ecosystem in India.
