A man is in custody after allegedly ambushing Chicago police officers, opening fire on two squad cars as cops investigated a prostitution complaint in Englewood early Monday morning. The officers, fortunately unharmed, did not return fire and successfully apprehended the gunman after a pursuit, CPD confirmed.

The incident unfolded around 6:03 a.m. in the 7500 block of South Peoria Street, where officers from the Englewood (7th) District were inside two marked patrol cars responding to a complaint about prostitution in the area.

According to preliminary information from CPD, a man on foot started shooting towards the officers and then into the air. He then fled in a black Nissan SUV. The officers initiated a pursuit, which ended when the vehicle crashed into two other vehicles in the 7600 block of South Union Avenue. One of the vehicles ended up on its side on the sidewalk, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The gunman attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by the officers. A firearm was recovered from the middle of the street in the 7500 block of South Union, and approximately seven shell casings were found at the scene of the initial shooting.

The suspect was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital for observation and remains in police custody. Two officers were also taken to a local hospital for observation but have since been released.

As of Monday evening, no charges have been announced in relation to the incident.
