The Surprising Intelligence of Elephants: Mastering the Art of Using a Hose

Elephants have once again proven their remarkable intelligence by showcasing their mastery in using a hose, a tool considered complex due to its flexibility, length, and the physics of flowing water.

A study conducted on three Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) at Berlin Zoo revealed their surprising ability to manipulate a hose to shower themselves. The elephants showed a deep understanding of how to effectively use the hose, even engaging in playful pranks by stopping the flow mid-shower, either by kinking the hose or compressing it with their trunks.

The researchers observed that the elephants used a lasso-like technique to reach distant parts of their bodies, holding the hose further from the end and swinging it over their backs.

Michael Brecht, from the Humboldt University of Berlin, noted that the elephants’ behavior around hoses resembled the way children play together. He speculated that their proficiency with hoses may be linked to the functional similarity between trunks and hoses.

Just as humans are either left-handed or right-handed, elephants exhibit a preference for using their trunks in a specific direction. The researchers noticed that the elephants also had a side preference when manipulating the hose. For example, one elephant named Mary used her trunk for showering the right side of her body but used the hose more for the left side.

Another elephant, Anchali, displayed five different behaviors to disrupt the water flow when Mary was showering, including hose positioning, lifting, kinking, regrasping the kink, and compressing. Brecht described this behavior as sabotage-like and noted that it is rarely seen in other animals.

Brecht’s previous research has shown that elephant trunks are one of the most sensitive body parts in the animal kingdom, allowing them to handle objects with precision similar to that of a human hand. This study further emphasizes the sophisticated trunk behaviors exhibited by elephants.

The remarkable intelligence and dexterity displayed by elephants in using hoses shed light on their complex cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills. These findings add to the growing body of research highlighting the exceptional capabilities of these majestic animals.
