HBO Max is forging ahead with its launch in the UK, undeterred by uncertainties surrounding its future as a standalone platform. The streaming service is scheduled to debut in the UK on March 26, offering subscription plans ranging from £4.99 to £14.99 per month. Additionally, subscribers will have the option to include TNT Sports as a standalone or add-on for £30.99 per month.
Preparations for the UK launch have been in motion for some time, with the platform making efforts to bring over talent from its popular shows and key executives such as JB Perrette, president of global streaming at Warner Bros. Discovery, and HBO chief Casey Bloys.
However, recent announcements from Paramount Skydance have revealed plans to merge their own streaming service, Paramount+, with HBO Max once the merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery is finalized. This development has thrown the future of HBO Max’s standalone status into question.
Despite these changes, HBO Max is set to introduce a lineup of exciting original British series, including Richard Gadd’s “Half Man” and an upcoming “Harry Potter” series currently in production for release next year. JB Perrette has touted the launch of these series as “the streaming event of the decade.”
Exclusive shows like “The Pitt” and all three seasons of “Euphoria” will also be available on HBO Max in the UK, with the third season shared with Sky as part of a previous content sharing agreement. According to Ellison, HBO will maintain its brand independence even as the platforms merge.
