Gerardo Naranjo, the director of the acclaimed film “Miss Bala,” is set to release his latest project titled “The Son-in-Law” (“El yerno”) on May 1 worldwide on Netflix. The film will first premiere in theaters in Mexico on April 19. The screenplay for “The Son-in-Law” was written by James Schamus, the co-founder and former CEO of Focus Features, along with Gabriel Nuncio and Alexandro Aldrete, who are known for their work on “The House of Flowers.” The film was produced by Schamus and Chile’s Fabula, led by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín.

The story of “The Son-in-Law” is described as a sharp, dark, and painfully funny take on the great Mexican dream. It follows the journey of José Sánchez, a man known for his impressive mustache, sharp wit, and relentless drive. After facing challenges in his business, José transforms into El Serpiente, a ruthless political strategist. To maintain his power, he must navigate a perilous deal that tests his charm and cunning.

Adrián Vázquez takes on the role of José Sánchez, with Jero Medina and Verónica Bravo also starring in the film. Director Gerardo Naranjo describes “The Son-in-Law” as an exploration of betrayal and a reflection of the ridiculous and contradictory realities of Mexican society.

This project marks James Schamus’ second collaboration with Netflix in Mexico, following the success of his first television series, “Somos,” which premiered in 2021. Schamus expresses his excitement for working in Mexico once again, highlighting the energy, talent, and creativity of the Mexican film industry.

Fabula, the production company behind “The Son-in-Law,” has a strong presence on Netflix with projects like “The Count” and “Maria.” The film is their first production in Mexico for the streaming platform. Francisco Ramos, VP of content for Latin America, praises the collaboration between Naranjo, Schamus, and the Larraín brothers, emphasizing the film’s unique perspective on Mexican reality.
