Warriorhood, as defined by artist Rupy C. Tut, is not just a physical battle but also a way of living an awakened life. Tut draws inspiration from her family’s migration history and Punjabi heritage to explore themes of kinship and displacement in her artwork. One of her recent works, titled “Battle Ready,” features suited figures floating among translucent jellyfish, symbolizing the emotional struggles and dangers faced by her characters.

Tut’s use of handmade pigments in her art adds another layer of symbolism to her work. Each color is assigned specific emotions and themes, creating a visual language that recurs throughout her practice. By limiting her palette, Tut creates a cohesive world where ideas evolve over time yet maintain a clear lineage to their origins.

For Tut, painting is both therapeutic and devotional, offering a way to navigate her identity as a woman, mother, and artist in a world filled with stereotypes and conventions. The act of creating pigments and working in the studio allows her to connect with something larger and explore the voids she feels in her life.

The warrior figure in Tut’s work symbolizes responsibility, honesty, justice, and humility, values that are central to both her life and art. Whether she is meticulously crafting a pigment or patiently waiting for it to dry, the artist pays homage to her ancestors and seeks to connect with others facing their own struggles.

Tut’s work is currently on display at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento and the National Portrait Gallery. She will also be featured in a group exhibition at the Horton Art Gallery at San Joaquin Delta College. To see more of her work, you can follow her on Instagram.

In conclusion, Rupy C. Tut’s art is a powerful exploration of identity, displacement, and resilience. Through her use of color, symbolism, and metaphor, she creates a visual language that speaks to the complexities of the human experience. Her work invites viewers to reflect on their own struggles and find strength in the act of living an awakened life.
