Both Worlds, an International Emmy-nominated South African production company, has joined forces with Atlanta-based Freeli Films to launch a co-production partnership aimed at developing and producing premium microdrama series and feature films. This exciting collaboration was announced at the Joburg Film Festival, with a focus on creating content for South African, broader African, and American audiences, followed by a global release.

One of the key highlights of this partnership is the involvement of acclaimed actor Taye Diggs, who will be featured in the companies’ initial co-productions. This collaboration will bring together Diggs with established South African and African performers, promising a blend of talent and storytelling from both continents.

Freeli Films, led by CEO J. Carter, is dedicated to showcasing Black stories and talent, emphasizing the importance of representation both on and off-screen. With a focus on Black-led drama, the company aims to position itself at the forefront of the microdrama genre, leveraging its strong relationships with major U.S. talent to create compelling content.

On the other hand, Both Worlds brings a wealth of experience in production, storytelling, and distribution, with a team deeply rooted in African narratives and broadcasting. The partnership with Freeli Films will form part of the premium international content strand under the newly established brand, Amazi. This brand will focus on developing original short-form vertical content for African audiences, starting in South Africa and expanding across the continent.

Amazi’s slate will feature hyperlocal African series produced in local languages, alongside English-language co-productions with international partners like Freeli Films. By combining local talent with global stars, Both Worlds aims to deliver captivating stories that resonate with diverse audiences.

Furthermore, Amazi’s distribution strategy includes collaborations with major mobile operators across Africa, tapping into the continent’s vast mobile viewership. With Africa emerging as a significant growth market for microdrama content, Both Worlds is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend and expand its reach.

The partnership with Freeli Films is just the beginning of a series of international co-productions planned under the Amazi banner. As the company continues to produce microdramas, led by executive producer Flavia Motsisi and head writer Karen Jeynes, the focus remains on creating authentic and engaging content for African audiences.

Motsisi, who will serve as Amazi’s chief creative officer, believes that the platform will revolutionize storytelling by showcasing African narratives in a way that resonates with local viewers. Both Worlds’ executive chairman Thierry Cassuto echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of representation and the exceptional talent present in South Africa and Africa.

Freeli Films CEO J. Carter sees the partnership as a strategic alignment rooted in culture, authenticity, and scalability. By investing in stories that reflect the realities and aspirations of African and African American audiences, the companies are not only expanding markets but also building a legacy of inclusive storytelling.

The Joburg Film Festival, where this collaboration was announced, will showcase the diversity and creativity of the African film industry from March 3 to 8 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Stay tuned for more groundbreaking content from Both Worlds, Freeli Films, and the Amazi brand as they continue to redefine the landscape of microdrama and feature films.
