Former Indian fielding coach R Sridhar recently shared his thoughts on Varun Chakaravarthy’s fielding blunder during India’s T20 World Cup 2026 quarterfinal match against the West Indies in Kolkata. Despite emerging victorious, the Indian team committed several costly fielding mistakes in the first innings.
The first major error occurred when Varun missed an easy run-out opportunity in the third over of the innings, leaving West Indian openers Shai Hope and Roston Chase unscathed. Varun threw the ball to the wrong end from the short cover region, allowing both batsmen to survive a potential run-out.
When questioned about Varun’s fielding lapse in an interview with Revsportz, Sridhar commented on the positioning of the fielders, stating that it might have been a safer option given the specific circumstances of the match. He also acknowledged that Varun has improved as a fielder overall but attributed the mistake to the pressure of the occasion.
Despite the early fielding mishap, Varun redeemed himself by breaking the opening partnership later in the innings when the West Indies were at 68/0 in the ninth over.
Sridhar also addressed Abhishek Sharma’s dropped catches during the same match, attributing them to the pressure of the situation. He emphasized that pressure is a privilege and urged Sharma to embrace it while learning from the experience.
Abhishek Sharma, who struggled with both fielding and batting in the match, will be looking to bounce back in the upcoming semifinal against England in Mumbai.
